I didn't know eggs came in so many colors until I moved to California. I think they're among the prettiest things in the world.

Someday I think owning chickens would be nice. I'd keep them pastured and collect the eggs every morning.

And I'm so glad you're back. I love everything you've been writing about lately. Everything. It makes me miss San Francisco and California and I just wish I could jet back in June to grab more pizza with you for your birthday again.

Hey there Karen,

I just realized my old website is still on your blogroll which is really cool. Thank you. I actually don't blog there anymore but I have a new site at blacksheepbaking.com. I live in the south of France now and it's all about my new adventures in baking there. I hope you want to still link to my site if you wish! Hope all is well in San Francisco!

More places for me to try next time I'm in San Fran. Did I tell you stopped at Tartine when I was there this summer? I bought a loaf of bread and greedily ate it as I walked back to my friends' apartment. I was so into the bread, I was bumping into things.

Basil on figs? I would have never guessed that combination. Figs are one of the biggest things I miss about California. It's so hard to get good ones here. My neighbor had a tree and brought some to me in August, but the rains ruined the rest of the crop -- it was heartbreaking. I guess all that's left to do is plan a trip to San Fran during fig season. You and I will have to meet at this farm.

I totally forgot about Oktoberfest. A happy one to you! So glad you got out there and enjoyed it. I spent a week in Germany when I was in high school and I'm still afraid to go to any German restaurant -- there were just so many sausages!

That pizza was seriously some of the best I've ever had. And if only I had my pizza stone from San Diego, I'd be making some for myself tonight. Oh, I want to move to San Fran so you and I could have little pizza get togethers. And I am so curious to know what you thought about the jam -- like I said, it's my favorite. Ever. Happy weekend, Karen!

I will have to make sure I stop into La Boulange and try their cookies when I'm up in San Fran this June. And I'm sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well for so long and hope you're beginning to feel better. Cookies always help, right?

looks like a great book. being mindful about where your food comes from is a really difficult concept these days. trying to teach myself + my children about how that works is a daily process. thanks for sharing ther ecommendation!

I need to read this book! I love knowing my food comes from -- it's actually really important to me. And though I make some exceptions here and there (like for white whole wheat and bananas), almost all my food is either local or from California. I even know some of the farmers who grow it.

I now have the worst fig craving ever.

There's really nothing like fresh strawberries to make it feel like spring. It's even better once they get really good and sweet and all you want to do is stand there by the kitchen sink, washing one at a time, eating it and savoring it sweet taste.

Seriously, she's amazing. She hasn't churned out a bad truffle yet. She used the tea leaves from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf's holiday tea blend, Winter Dream to make the white chocolate truffle. major talent!

Wow. You've got an awesome cousin. I've never tried to make candies like this. They're one of the things I'll buy for myself on occasion, whenever I find myself in a very chocolate mood. I can't imagine what a bacon truffle would be like -- and since I can't eat bacon, I'll never know. Ah well. Happy Friday, Karen!

I will so have to try this. Does it get fizzy like most sodas or is it flat? Honestly, I've never really like drinking things besides milk, water, and juice, but I'll give anything a try once. There's a Japanese grocery store nearby I've been dying to get to -- maybe I'll find a bottle of kombucha there.

I had no idea that leaves sprouted new succulents. They're so charming, Karen. I think that even I might be able to keep these little plants alive.

They're hard to do, aren't they? And more than that -- every recipe I've tried making is simply too sweet. I may attempt another round this summer, but I'll need to find a better recipe first.

I've never seen a mandarin like this before. I can only imagine how wonderfully sweet it must be. And I'm sorry to hear you've been battling the flu for months. That's crazy! Hopefully you're finally getting over it and returning to a sense of normalcy -- and to your farmer's markets.

The only reason I know what these are is because I randomly wandered into the big Williams-Sonoma in San Francisco around Christmastime and they were demonstrating how to make these. They were super delicious and I've been wanting a pan since. Is it awful that the first thing I can think of doing is filling them with nutella? Sometimes I get on such chocolate kicks...

I don't work much with lemons -- it's simply not a flavor I love as much as others, but these are so beautiful. I may make them just so I can give them to people. And lemons are so perfectly in season right now too! And I can't believe your oven is running almost 100 degrees hotter at times! That's crazy. An appliance that malfunctions that much would challenge any baker.

Sadly, I don't-- ever since I was a teenager I've worked hard to convince her to teach me, but her pride got in the way. She wanted to be the only person with the recipe, and the one time I finally got her to "teach" me, she did so through a fast demonstration--nothing in writing, everything in ratios, and all in chinese.

You really do need the milk to go with it. I love bouchons but they're one of the most dense things I make. So glad you had fun with this recipe! I should send you some of my really good cocoa powder for the next time you make it.

I fully support you trying out Allyn's recipe. And yes, I totally see the humor in not having the more common "sugar in the raw" but having a kitchen stocked with specialty rose petal sugar that I found at the farmer's market. Go figure :)

Doesn't Allyn have the most beautiful handwriting? I wish I could steal it from her.

And you had rose petal sugar, but not turbinado sugar on hand? I'm just fascinated. I had no idea rose petal sugar even existed.

Allyn sent me this recipe too. I need to try it, especially since I now have lemons in the house.

karen, these look fantastic! rose petal sugar sounds beautiful as it does sweet. i'm so glad you signed up for the exchange. your photos look great. it's so hard to photograph + bake|cook all at once. my favorite pic is of the rosemary, sugar + lemon zest. you can almost smell the combination!

the swapping of things personalized it in such a special way.

i'm so glad we met. your blog has the sweetest stories + treats. stay warm!

What an amazing recipe -- and your incredible photography just makes me want to run into the kitchen and start cooking right now. All that's missing for me is a dollop of ice cream.

And I'm really glad you've gotten your energy back. I've missed you.
