February 2011 . Terrarium
Squeeker, squeak, squeakin’ squeak squeaky squeak…In other words… I’m nutz about you!
Spring hasn’t yet arrived, but I’ve begun to make use of my green thumb. What started out with a tiny potted succulent, now includes two basil pots and several succulent gardens. I really love creating tiny worlds inside random glass containers.

March 2011 . Gold Nugget Mandarin Oranges
They should be called “蓮霧“….I can take a picture for you.
I’ve been battling the flu off-and-on these past few months (yes months, not weeks) and found myself bundled up in bed during some of the warmest and sunniest winter days. It also meant that I’ve been unable to do my weekly farmer’s market shopping. Fortunately, I live a few blocks from a small, family run version of Whole Foods. Real Food Company is a great little store which stocks its shelves with local sourced meats and produce. Some of the local produce even comes from the same farmers who sell at the farmer’s market, including these wrinkly mandarin oranges, also know as organic gold nugget mandarins.

December 2010 . Succulent
Step 1: Breathe. Step 2: Observe.

I’m part way there, feeling immensely better than two weeks ago. It was one of those moments where I needed that gentle reminder to stop and refocus. I’m thankful for everyone’s support. It’s done a world of good for my spirits.
That said, in addition to everyone’s well wishes, I’ve found myself drawing positive energy from an unexpected source: my kitchen garden.

November 2010 . Rouge vif D'Etampes Pumpkin
“You’re dedicated. Those who brave the rain to shop at the farmers market are loyal customers.”
A couple weekends ago, while drizzly and wet, I found myself in rare form to don my elephant galoshes and walked to the market. I sloshed my way through puddles to the Fort Mason farmers market and found a relatively empty marketplace. Farmers were cheerful and more chatty than normal–perhaps due to the lack of activity taking place. It was there that a farmer introduced me to rouge vif d’etampes, a cinderella pumpkin great for baking sweets. So while I’ve got thoughts of pumpkin risotto lingering in the back of my mind, a pumpkin dessert will be created first!

October 2010 . Farm Fresh Eggs
“As you step off the mat and back into the world, always remember to breathe.”
This weekend is the annual Harvest Festival at the Ferry Building and with an event lineup of food tastings, farm to table talks, and live music, it’s worthy of donning rain boots for a day (or two) of celebration!
