December 2010 . Succulent
Step 1: Breathe. Step 2: Observe.
I’ve got one foot slipping deep inside a whirlpool of ever-changing moments. The other is striving to pull the first onto solid ground. I’m part way there, feeling immensely better than two weeks ago. It was one of those moments where I needed that gentle reminder to stop and refocus. I’m thankful for everyone’s support. It’s done a world of good for my spirits.
That said, in addition to everyone’s well wishes, I’ve found myself drawing positive energy from an unexpected source: my kitchen garden.

December 2010 . Succulent & Friend
I received the above succulent from the Wonderarium, during one of their Succulent Circus tours. Tending to this little guy has been easy: water once a week and let the soil dry out before watering again. With such low maintenance, I didn’t worry about leaving it while I was away on travel (unlike my newly potted basil plants). When I returned home, I noticed the above little sprout! Initially I thought that it was a baby succulent and proceeded to scour the Internet for information. I didn’t have much luck since none of the pictures I found looked remotely similar to what I had.
I decided to seek the advice of the very people who introduced this little plant into my life. I left a comment on their Website and included a picture. To my delight, I was told that it wasn’t a succulent baby. It was a little seed that had found its way into the soil!

December 2010 . Succulent & Friend
The succulent is quite happy, and I suppose it must be because its got a little friend to keep it company. Since these photos were taken, it’s grown an additional six inches and grown four sprightly branches with flat round leaves. I’m still not sure what this friend is (heck, I don’t even know the name of my succulent), but am sure happy that both are thriving peacefully together.
I can’t wait until Spring arrives when my home gets better sunlight and babies… succulent babies!
wonderful to see new things grow.
Wow! Maybe I should try caring for a succulent. I’ve always had such bad luck with plants in the past. Good thing for me — I have no problem keeping my cats alive, but that be because they’re constantly reminding me they need love.
Ooh, these photographs are gorgeous. Sadly, I don’t think I have a green thumb. :/
Brandi and Erika, succulents are such easy plants to care for! No prior green thumb prerequisite required–they thrive on neglect!
There’s something about growing green things that really nurture the soul, green thumb or no
And succulents are magical somehow!
