July 2010 . Sweetness & Light: The Mysterious History of the Honeybee
“…eating is an intimate activity. The desire for knowledge is behind the success of farmers’ markets, where you can meet producers face-to-face, ask questions, and get a sense of who they are, in the process of discovering what is on your doorstep.”
Some of my favorite passages comes from this book, Sweetness and Light: The Mysterious History of the Honeybee by Hattie Ellis.
“For life is all one: as big as the world and as small as the honeybee.”
From traditional apiary on small farms to modern skeps on urban rooftops, Hattie Ellis did a wonderful job chronicling our love for honey. She details the daily order of bee life and the variety of fascination for honey found among different cultures so wonderfully, that it’s hard not to see why great bee intellects such as Lorenzo Langstroth were so taken with the honeybee and how they were able to study and invent new technologies that greatly impact modern day honey production.
